Youth Voices on Climate Change: A Comprehensive Needs Assessment Report
This report compiles the findings of the Needs Assessment Questionnaire conducted across all partner countries (Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Türkiye, and the Netherlands) within the framework of the ECHOES Project (Youth Voices for Climate Action in European Elections). Combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study reflects the voices, concerns, and objectives of youth workers and young people in their pursuit of effective climate action.
The research highlights key challenges, including limited awareness of effective climate policies among youth workers, the exclusion of young people from climate-related decision-making, and the psychological toll of eco-anxiety. These barriers, alongside systemic issues such as insufficient funding, political inertia, and the rise of climate change denial, hinder youth participation in climate advocacy. Findings from the UN Stockholm +50 Survey (2022) parallel these insights, revealing that over 50% of young people experience climate-related anxiety, while 80% express skepticism toward governmental actions.
This report identifies urgent needs for enhanced education, advocacy tools, mental health support, and resources to empower young people and youth workers. Participants of the questionnaire emphasized the importance of training programs, funding, and networking opportunities, as well as the role of innovative digital tools in amplifying youth-led climate initiatives. By addressing these gaps, the ECHOES Project aims to equip a new generation of climate advocates with the skills and platforms necessary to influence policies and drive impactful change.
The insights from this Needs Assessment Report serve as a foundation for the ECHOES Project’s ongoing work, enabling the development of targeted initiatives that bridge the gap between youth aspirations and actionable climate policies. Together, we strive to elevate youth voices, foster inclusive decision-making, and build a resilient movement for climate action across Europe.
